The cult of the Nitrodi Nymphs
Long before science understood its properties, the Nitrodi Spring was held to be a special place. According to ancient tradition, the Nymphs guarded the purity of its waters and the wealth of herbs growing along the valley.
Soldiers, physicians and travellers came to Ischia seeking relief for their skin. In gratitude they left votive inscriptions dedicated to Apollo and the guardian Nymphs, testimonies that history preserves to this day.
The account of Pliny the Elder
As the Roman Empire expanded, the fame of the spring travelled beyond the island. It was Pliny the Elder who, in his Naturalis Historia, described the extraordinary properties of the waters of Ischia.
His work is one of the oldest written testimonies devoted to the wellbeing of the skin, establishing Nitrodi as one of the most important thermal sites in the Western world.
The studies of Giulio Iasolino
In the Renaissance, the physician and anatomist Giulio Iasolino explored the island's water basins to understand their character. Among all the springs, he identified in Nitrodi a unique mineral balance.
In his celebrated treatise De' rimedi naturali che sono nell'isola di Pithecusa he described Nitrodi as an extraordinary natural resource for the care and wellbeing of the skin, giving new scientific authority to an already ancient tradition.
The legacy continues with Ischia Spaeh
Still today, in the heart of Ischia, the water of Nitrodi rises naturally at 28°C, keeping its precious mineral composition.
