In the first century BC, the Nitrodi Nymphs Spring on Ischia was already a centre of care renowned across the Mediterranean. Physicians, soldiers of the Empire and citizens who regained their health and skin wellbeing returned to carve their gratitude to Apollo and the guardian Nymphs into marble.

The votive reliefs recovered at the spring are not mere archaeological finds, but the oldest historical testimony of skin relief in the Western world. A continuity that in the Renaissance found scientific grounding in the hydrological studies which identified the water of Nitrodi as an irreplaceable natural remedy for purifying the skin.
